Collected Drabbles

The drabbles from my latest offer.

Greeneyelove asked for a determined Tim chasing an oblivious Dick.

Tim prides himself on his skill as a detective. He notices which hiding place Penguin looks at when he's boasting. He can tell whom Batman fought just by looking at the set of Bruce's shoulders. He can hear the tiny shifts in Oracle's electronic voice that hint at Babs' emotional state.

But, mostly, he can see the way Dick has been looking at him lately. He has a few hypotheses about those long glances, about the way Dick's casual touches have started stretching into caresses whenever Dick isn't paying attention.

Empirical evidence says Dick wants him.

But Dick himself doesn't seems to notice. Or maybe, he notices a bit too much. He wouldn't meet Tim's eyes for nearly two hours, after the first time Tim caught him staring. He snatched his hands away like he'd been burned, last time he started to pet Tim's hair.

And that is completely unacceptable. Tim is going to have a talk with his big brother. Either that maddening touching will stop, or Dick is damn well going to follow through with it.
Tim wants a chance to do some watching of his own.

Shananagin asked for Bernard/Tim and carrot cake.

"How can you like that stuff?" Tim stared at the vaguely orange mess that Bernard was happily scarfing.

Bernard held his cake protectively. "Just because you cannot appreciate the finer things in life, doesn't mean that the rest of us are similarly handicapped. And carrot cake with cream cheese frosting is about as fine as it gets." He took another bite and chewed it slowly with obvious enjoyment.

Tim watched him until he began licking his spoon demonstratively, nearly moaning in a parody of ecstacy. Then Tim looked pointedly away. "Hedonist."

Bernard swallowed the cake, and scooped another bite onto his fork. "Philistine."

"Sybarite."

"Stoic."

Tim snorted. "You ain't seen nothing yet. Voluptuary."

"You're just jealous."

"Right. Of course, Bernard. I am overcome with yearning for that lumpy brown stuff you're devouring."

Bernard ignored the heavy sarcasm. He nodded cheerfully. "Yep! And you're mad at me 'cause I won't share."

Tim rolled his eyes and gave up.

Felonazcorp asked for a domestic spat between Dick and Roy that ends with Roy terrified that Dick will leave. She got ... most of that.
"That's what you think, huh? That's all you feel? Well, screw it. If that's all I am to you, why don't you just go?!" Roy's throat seizes up as soon as the words leave his mouth. Anger is buzzing in his veins and he want to hold on to it. Wants to keep that anger there, a buffer against the cold fear that is trying to slide it's slimy way in.

Because, really, that's the question, isn't i? What the hell is Dick doing with him, with a junky, a failure? What can he offer that could possibly entice this vibrant man, with his brilliant blue eyes and his infuriating standards? Why would Dick ever want, ever tolerate someone like him?

Maybe he should just let him go. Let Dick go back to the people he really wants, the ones that deserve him. Ride off nobly into the sunset, leaving the field to the qualified competitors.

But there's Lian. He doesn't want to explain to his angel why Uncle Dick never visits any more, why he's finally screwed things up enough to that Uncle Dick is never coming back. Lian doesn't know words like 'junky', and he can't tell her that he was a coward.

So Roy sets his feet, raises his chin, and turns to face Dick's next comment head-on. No matter how painful, how soul-destroying it is.

That man is not walking out that door.

Darthbatgirl asked for Dick/Roy/Tim with Tim feeling like a third wheel.

Tim has always had a great respect for history. He's trying to live up the Robin legacy, after all. How could he know what he's supposed to do, what Robin is supposed to be, without knowing what Robin had been before? How could he understand a villain's modus operandi  without studying hundred of past plots, both failed and successful?

But, beyond the sheer usefulness of the subject, Tim recognizes the power of a person's past. The attractive familiarity of old habits, the crushing impact of old emotions. He's even felt that impact himself a few times.

And that is why he really should have known better than this. He should never have presumed to enter-- to interefere with--any relationship between Dick and Roy. He should have known that he could never fit, could never compete, could never share in their closeness. Monumental hubris, even to wish for it.

Because Dick and Roy were once Robin and Speedy. They built a fraught, passionate relationship over years of trust and love and broken promises. Next to that, Tim has nothing to offer. Nothing that could possibly interest either of them.

The history is against him.

Shananagin asked for Bart'/Tim with world domination

"Hey, Robin! What would you do if you ruled the world?"

"I'm busy, Impulse."

"I mean, if I ruled the world, there would be lots more food and nothing would ever stretch on for minutes and minutes and-"

"I'm busy, Imp. Go bother Superboy."

"- and people like you would never be too busy to play with me." He opened his eyes wide and tried to look pathetic. It was so boring at the old Justice League headquarters. Even the Supercycle was ignoring him.

Robin sighed and closed the laptop. At this rate, he'd never get anything done, anyway.

"Ruling the world isn't that simple. You'd have to settle disputes between people, so they wouldn't attack each other and you'd have to figure out who got access to which limited resources and how much you could justify harming the environment to improve human quality of life."

"Oh."

"It'd be a lot of work, most of it really boring."

"Boring? How could if be boring? I'd just make it so people had to entertain me!"

"Well, you'd have to sit through long meetings with self-important people who would talk on and on for hours about what they needed or wanted. You'd have to listen to long reports about exactly what was happening, so you would know how to respond to it. You would barely ever get to go have fun."

"Oh. Huh. Doesn't sound like much fun at all. Why do all those people we fight seem to want it?"

Tim raised both eyebrows high enough to tug his mask out of alignment. "You know, Bart, I have long suspected that insanity might play a role."

Omg, the last line in the Tim/Bart. That was made of sheer wonderufl like I've rarely seen. *runs off to squee*

Thank you! I'm glad you could tell that the Bart/Tim one was separate, even though I messed up the formatting.

I'm glad you liked it. Because, really, the world is a bit of a complicated mess. Who'd want it?!
SMGriffin[info]smgriffin on September 2nd, 2008 12:46 am (UTC)
hmm, Lex Luthor, I suppose. He seems rather fond of overly complex issues.
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on September 2nd, 2008 12:54 am (UTC)
True. But Lex Luthor is not exactly in possession of his sanity. Not the usual variety, anyway.

Is the Tim and Bart one at the end a different prompt than Tim angsting over being a third wheel?

Enjoyed them all, especially the first, because Tim will get his way and it will most likely be more touching and staring with Dick. And Tim angsting over Dick and Roy, of course. He just has to realize how special he is. And Roy... man, can really feel it, how scared he is that Dick can never get over Roy being a junkie, and screwed up, not that Dick isn't screwed up either.

Nice.
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on September 2nd, 2008 12:30 am (UTC)
Yes, it is. Sorry about that. I've fixed it.

I;m glad you liked these despite the formatting error. The first one was a little hard for me to imagine at first, because I almost always write that pairinrg the other way: with Dick persuing an oblivious Tim.

No, my Tim never seems to realize how special he is. But, with any luck, Dick and Roy can help with that.

You know, almost all my characters have self-esteem issues, now that I think of it. Roy certainly does. But Lian helps. She doesn't have any self-esteem problems, and she's the best thing that ever happened to him.

Thank you very much. Sorry if this more than you ever wanted to hear.
Quiet Tiger: Dick's Ass[info]quiet__tiger on September 2nd, 2008 12:43 am (UTC)
No worries, I like when people are actually people when they get comments, not just machines that say "Thanks!" It's nice.

I usually write Tim pursuing Dick, or just an established PWP. They can go either way, though. Smart but obtuse, just like Bruce.

The characters all have issues in the comics, so it's good to carry those over to the fic. Having them all be perfect wouldn't be too in character!

Lian is awesome. Roy would totally be different without her.

I tend to ramble, so I certainly don't mind when other people do!
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on September 2nd, 2008 12:59 am (UTC)
Yeah, it's nice to have some sort of conversation.

Yeah, that works. Usually, in my mind, Tim has been worshipping Dick since approzimately age four, but he's convinced that Dick just wants a little brother. Brilliant but obtuse, as you said.

Yeah, they really do. It's what makes them interesting.

Yes, Lian is completely awesome. The world would be a darker place without her.

Great. I rambling is always fun, but I'd hate to impose a ramble on someone unwilling.
Quiet Tiger: Short Pants[info]quiet__tiger on September 2nd, 2008 01:06 am (UTC)
Timmy definitely has been worshipping Dick. I just love Kon too much to not give Tim to him sometimes. :)

Dude, at least we're on topic here. I have people come into my journal and babble to me about shows I don't even *watch*, let alone ones I'm just not talking about at that time. Drives me bonkers.
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on September 3rd, 2008 12:16 am (UTC)
Yep. It's practically canon! But Kon is good with Tim, too.

That sounds annoying!
roguecatwoman: R[info]roguecatwoman on September 2nd, 2008 04:55 pm (UTC)
Hee! I loved Tim getting exasperated with Bernard and his cake! LOL!

And the last one was made of win! =)
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on September 3rd, 2008 12:17 am (UTC)
Thank you very much.

Tim might, possibly, have been teasing Bernard. Possibly.

Thanks! Yeah, I would not want to rule the world. The paperwork alone would take lifetimes.
stalinglim[info]stalinglim on September 12th, 2008 03:19 am (UTC)
Oh, OH! The Roy and Dick was... eeeeeee. Oh my.

And the last one? *snickers* that's what I always wonder. When they GET the world, what would the DO wtih it?
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on December 12th, 2008 06:36 am (UTC)
Thanks! I'm really glad you approve, since that's a pairing that I more-or-less picked up from you.

Rule it, of course. And poor Robin would have even more paperwork to do!
saavikam77: Timmy[info]saavikam77 on September 12th, 2008 07:29 pm (UTC)
Aww, so much angst here! Poor Tim and Roy and Bart. LOVED the first one, of course. ^_~ And gods, now I'm hungry for carrot cake! XD
anthraciteowl[info]anthraciteowl on December 12th, 2008 06:38 am (UTC)
Angst? But of course! What else did you expect, on my journal?

Thanks. I'm glad you liked them. *hands you a piece of carrot cake*
